Hello 2011!

Wow this blog is 4 years old! Happy birth month! I’m trying to decide what to do this year, including specifically with this blog. Do I let it go on this way (posting sporadically and sometimes way off topic), or do I shut it down and start a new blog that isn’t specifically on garbage?
My other huge decision is about THE BOOK. I have been meaning to write a book since a publishing company contacted me in 2007. I have lots of started copies but I keep changing my idea. One is a coffee table book with tidbits from the blog, and my story and recipes pictures drawings etc. One is a kid’s book illustrated with garbage collage. My very first idea and the one I have circled back to is basically a book of my blog entries from the start (with the Tribe blog). It would be cleaned up, made book friendly (links removed, context put in etc.) and have an intro and little explainy bits here and there. I would like to have it on the type of “paper” they use for Cradle to Cradle, which I am currently reading and thoroughly enjoying.
I have been invited to join a writer’s group (well actually I was invited in October, but now I finally have time) and I want to have my idea solidified before arriving. So What do you think? If I put my blog posts together as a book with an intro and prologue, epilogue, photos etc, would you buy it, read it, wash off the ink and write your own book on it?

  1. I love your blog. Congratulations on your 4 year anniversary!

  2. Your blog is very encouraging. I’m going to be honest, it would be very difficult to eliminate as much garbage as you have done, but you are still a great motivation!

    • Thanks for reading and commenting. With your line of work, it may not be profitable for people to stop making trash. What do you do with the junk you pick up? Does it go to the sump or do you find uses for some of it?

  3. Hi there,

I found your blog while browsing on topics of interest… reducing garbage, eliminating plastic, minimizing consumption, etc. It looks great. and I’ll check for ideas. Meanwhile, I thought you might be interested in this project that we’ve started here in Ottawa, along similar lines. We have a blog at maclmax.typepad.com and have done a petition on plastic packaging of Ontario fruit, http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/stop-packaging-local-fruit-in-plastic.html Maybe you and your readers would be interested in signing it.

    • Thanks, no plastic project person. I am going to contact Kingston Waste about putting the garbage right into the bin without a bag. I live in an apartment so I can’t do that right now, but we won’t live here forever. I had never thought of that. Brilliant! Do you have names and addresses to send the petitions to? I can post them here so people can write letters. It’s is hundreds of times more effective than online petitions. No offense intended, it’s awesome to do something, anything, but now let’s do more:)

      • Sarah, if you email me directly(I think you have access to my email address?) I will print and mail you copies of the petition, with the address to return them to. That would be great! And no offense taken! We have posted paper copies a couple of places around here, too and probably should look into more.

  4. This is the first time I’ve visited your blog and I find it very interesting and entertaining. I’ve been considering changing the subject matter of my blog, and can relate to your ambivalence about your own choice of topic. Have you started another blog with a different subject? If so, where can it be found?

I haven’t started a new blog on another topic. I’m still interested in this one and have some posts in my mind but really I haven’t had time to focus on any blogging. I am currently focused on my expanding natural products business, my family and making baby presents for my friends. I don’t think you necessarily have to focus on one topic, but if you have a theme to pull you through, it helps. For example 1000 Awesome things blog is really about everything. To get more readers you need to network, and mention other blogs in your blogs, who likely in turn will mention you in theirs. Also getting press helps. If you do something that seems extreme, unusual or simply fitting to the hot topic of the time, you may get press (like it or not) and then get more blog hits.

  7. In my opinion residential and commercial garbage is not much harmful for man or environment but the industrial garbage is very dangerous, it should be washed or recycled.
